Road Worriers

Time lost to heavy traffic—here in Wales—counted against the firemen, who hoped to (and finally did) win a special medal for finishing the event in less than 20 hours. Keith Bacon and Mike Fortune took turns behind the wheel of the van. Though they didn't climb any of the mountains, both were essential members of the team. "You spend at least 11 hours on the road," says photographer Joel Sartore, "so you need good people up there in the front seat."
