High Expectations
Photograph by Joel Sartore
Some guys'll do anything for a thrill. Kelvin Highmore, left, and Tom Perkins prepare to "IceBlast" off during a visit to Blackpool's Pleasure Beach. The amusement park has become a traditional stop for these Chippenham, England, firemen and their hiking teammates as they head north to compete in the Three Peaks Challenge. Great Britain's three highest mountains might barely rate as molehills in craggier countriesthe loftiest summit, Scotland's Ben Nevis, rises only 4,408 feet (1,344 meters). But each year thousands climb the Three Peaks (as they're known) of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike in England, and Snowdon in Wales. And despite a 500-mile (800-kilometer) travel route, many attempt to do it in under 24 hours.
