Villagers from Daeseong-dong, population 225, require the protection of South Korean soldiers as they picnic a few hundred yards from the North Korean border. Farmers from Daeseong-dongthe only village inside the southern half of the DMZown the largest rice farms in South Korea, a perk provided by the government to keep the town inhabited. In exchange, residents must obey an 11 p.m. curfew and spend at least eight months a year in the village or lose their homes.
