War Is in the Air
Photograph by Michael Yamashita
Preparing for the worst, medics from South Korean and U.S. military units react to a simulated gas attack at a training ground near the DMZ. Fifty years after a cease-fire agreement ended the Korean War, large armies still mass along the narrow buffer zone that divides the peninsula. North Korea has positioned most of its one million soldiers near the border, along with thousands of artillery pieces. South Korea's army is smaller, yet it commands far superior firepower and has 20,000 U.S. troops on its side.
